Something Iâve noticed before and have been noticing again is how much people love the feeling of variable reward. These moments where you hold your breath thinking: âwill I make itâ, âwill i get itâ or âhow much will I getâ.
Hereâs some examples Iâve noticed in games which perfectly exemplify this sensation Iâm talking about.
Jump king
Gameplay loop:
- Hold button down to select power with no indication that youâve selected the right amount of power
- Hold your breath to see if youâve made it to the next platform
- See yourself make the next platform or fall
Balatro
Gameplay loop:
- Select a set of cards for your hand
- Hold your breath to see if your hand makes enough points
- See your hand calculate and generate enough or too little points
